If you can possibly edit the guide @Anonymous you can now do a sim swap through the My O2 app, certainly on contract but I'm not sure about PAYG. Perhaps someone can check.....

Hi - I  have purchased an update mobile from O2 today. Will it come with my existing number and if not what do I have to do to retain my number?

If it was an upgrade to your existing contract it will come with a new blank sim.
If your current sim fits the new phone, you should use it but if not, do the sim swap to change to the new sim.
