WhatsApp and data issue

Hey all. I've been In Australia 10 days with data and Wi-Fi working fine then suddenly my WhatsApp stopped working at all. Tried to usual uninstall etc which didn't work so reset my internet settings. This seems to have completely stopped my data working and a message saying "data has been lost as roaming wasn't turned on when phone left home network"appears whenever I turn my data on. I think it works when i turn on the extra roaming button but I don't really want to leave this on in case i get extra charges (the normal date package is just £4.99 per day using all your normal calls etc). Anyone know how i can fix this abroad? Wi-Fi is few and far between!

@Sav you need data roaming on and you wouldn't get charged any more than the standard daily rate.
