I just found out, through what I thought was a wrong number, that someone else has the same phone number as me. She lives in the Shetland Islands and I'm in England. I've had my number for years. This shouldn't be a thing, should it?

This physically can't happen on a mobile phone network, as everything is tied to your sim card and your number..
You can have the same 6 digits at the end of the number but a different prefix so you could have
07842 abcdef
07719 abcdef
07957 abcdef
07777 abcdef
How do you know she has the same number as you?
