Hi

I keep losing my signal but when I put the SIM into another iphone and then put it back in my phone it works again - why?!

I would do both of these, get a new SIM card, the best way is to take photo ID and pop into an o2 store, as if you call o2 they will cut off your current SIM card. 

 

I would also contact Apple Support and get them to check the device https://support.apple.com either via a Genius Bar or remotely.

If the sim works in another phone, it appears to be an issue with your phone.

Try to reset Network Settings
