No network connection on new phone/sim

I have just upgraded my sons phone lPhone xs to iPhone 12 Pro keeping the same number. He has transferred all his data from the xs but he has no network services on the new 5G sim that came with the phone. I thought his number would be automatically be transferred to the new sim. Am I missing something that needs to be done to activate it ?

Use the old sim unless you are in a 5g area.

If so, do a sim swap Guide: Sim Swap: a mini guide 2017 update
