I have been sent a new SIM with my upgraded iPhone. If I activate the new SIM, will the old SIM still work in my spare basic emergency phone device?

Hi @Anonymous Yes it will. I had two phones...one on contract and the other on PAYG...two phones, two sims, two different numbers.....(the spare phone was kept just as yours will be..purely as an emergency back up device)
The new sim you have been sent will be blank. The only way to activate it is to do a.sim swap which will render your old sim useless.
To do what you want you need to get a separate PAYG sim for your back up phone.
You can't have 2 sims on the same number.

I think we viewed the question differently @MI5. I wasn't inferring the op would have two sims using the same number.
When I went to contract I took the number assigned to the sim that came with the phone and my old payg phone retained its existing number...

Yes if you want a new number but not by activating the sim you've been given with an upgrade.

As I said I answered the question based on my own experience and from a different perspective.

How else would they activate the sim?
I think we are going round in circles Rich. I tried to explain what happened in my circumstances. New phone.. new sim ..I had a new number assigned to my new contract sim. I took that number. It didn't involve my second phone at all. However I have no wish to confuse the op further so will back away and leave you to it.
