Which phone are you using?
If it's an iPhone, you'll possibly need to disable the old number in your iMessage settings.
Apple Watch Series 4

Yes you should enter your own number into the settings.
- Go to Settings.
- Tap Phone.
- Tap My Number.
- Use the delete button to remove the old number.
- Use the keypad to enter the new number.
- Tap Save.
- Restart the iPhone.
