O2 Travel Changes 7/4

Anonymous
Not applicable

Hi All,

I have been usng the free O2 Travel bolt on since 2016 as I travel to European countries quite often. I use it primarily to browse for when wifi is unattainable. I browse and I get charged £1.99 for the day. In terms of of making phone calls and text messages. If I text a UK number whilst in a European country I get charged 4p. So the overall current setup is:

"While travelling in Europe just pay a 50p connection charge to make and receive calls between European countries then talk for free for up to 60 mins. You'll pay just £1.99 for the days you use data in Europe & there’s no upper limit, but traffic management steps apply. £40 monthly spending limit for data outside Europe."

An email has been sent out from O2 stating changes to how O2 travel works. It now states that:

"From 7 th April 2016, we’ll be adding calls and texts sent back to the UK and within O2 Travel destinations, to the data you already get with our O2 Travel Bolt On. This will give you data, up to 120 minutes and 120 standard texts, per daily charge within selected destinations in Europe. With O2 Travel you’ll only be charged for the days that you use it."

My udnerstanding is that from 7/4 if I am in a European country and I text a UK number, rather than being charged 4p like I used to be, I will be charged £1.99.  Is this correct? I appreciate they are saying you can send up to 120 messages and still get charged £1.99 but I never send 120 messages. I usually send just a couple. By this logic, the £1.99  charged that was activated only when you used data, will now also be activated by sending a text message. If I send one text per day for 3 days I will end up paying £5.99?

Can someone please verify tell me if I have misunderstood the change?

Thank you.

PS: I am not asking to be told about the different options to circumvent sending a text.. I just want to know that I have understood the changes correctly. slight_smile

Got mine on the 3rd :

Changes from 7 April

Since you’re on O2 Travel, we thought we’d let you know that from 7 April, minutes and texts in Europe will also be included in your O2 Travel daily charge. So you can get all the data, minutes and texts you need in Europe for just £1.99 a day.

Find out more at http://www.o2.co.uk/o2travelupdate

Usage terms apply.

Thanks,

May I ask is tethering included in that £1.99 daily charge and what speeds you are getting when in roaming?

Still waiting to hear all the information as yet @Anonymous. As for speeds when roaming I go to Spain frequently and have never experienced 4G ....(although it is available) but my speeds are as fast as the UK. This is near Malaga

Whilst you can tether, it is completely pointless.
Data speeds are only good enough for email and basic browsing.

Hi guys,

Just to add to @PhoneDoc's answer you can read the official information on the changes to O2 Travel below.

Calls and texts will soon be included in the £1.99 O2 Travel daily charge.

From 7 th April 2016, we’ll be adding calls and texts sent back to the UK and within O2 Travel destinations, to the data you already get with our O2 Travel Bolt On. This will give you data, up to 120 minutes and 120 standard texts, per daily charge within selected destinations in Europe. With O2 Travel you’ll only be charged for the days that you use it.

How will O2 Travel work from 7th April?

O2 Travel is a free Bolt On that can be used by all O2 Pay Monthly customers travelling within selected European destinations – take a look below to see what countries are covered.

If you’re already registered and opted in to O2 Travel, you’ll pay just £1.99 for each day you use data, make calls and send texts, in the selected O2 Travel destinations.  The £1.99 charge will be triggered automatically when calls or texts are made to other O2 Travel destinations including the UK, or when data is used. Any unused data, calls and texts won’t be carried over to the following day. O2 Travel won’t be triggered by receiving calls or text messages.

O2 Travel destinations

O2 Travel is currently available in the following destinations - Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Monaco, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Guernsey, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Italy, Vatican, San Marino, Jersey, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

What’s included in the O2 Travel daily charge?

From 7th April, calls, texts and data will all be included in a daily charge of £1.99.  You can use up to 120 minutes and send up to 120 texts, back to the UK and all other O2 Travel destinations, each day. If you go over the daily calls and texts limit, you’ll be charged at the standard European roaming rates for any additional usage.

What’s excluded from my O2 Travel daily charge?

Your daily rate of £1.99 for O2 Travel excludes calls and texts to countries outside of the selected destinations, premium rate numbers, non-standard texts and MMS.

Opting out of O2 Travel

If you want to opt-out, you can do so at any time by texting “NOTRAVEL” to 23336. It can take up to 24 hours for O2 Travel to be removed from your account. If you do opt-out of O2 Travel, you’ll automatically be charged standard European roaming rates for all calls, texts and data usage when travelling.

I hope this helps clear up any confusion but if anyone is still unsure and has any questions please let me know.

This is a different question to the OP but I'll ask for clarification now.
