Being charged for leaving o2

My contract for my device plan has ended this month (April). After unhelpful advice and being unable to secure an air time only plan, I have gone elsewhere. I was  surprised to receive a "contact us for an upgrade" email. I have contacted O2 and have once again been advised I now have to pay more money to leave......

My question is reference the legality of this, as I have not signed, or verbally agreed to the continuation of any contract. Infact I was advised by O2 (below) that my contract would terminate and I am responsible for renewing any contracts.

I agree, I called to discuss my contract ending next month, I asked "will someone be in touch", I was told a flat "No" hence all the faffing and timewasting yesterday.

If you have given notice to O2 that you wish to cancel you will need to pay for the final month as you need to give 30 days notice.
After that, your obligation to pay has ended, but double check to ensure it has been cancelled.
