I pre-ordered a phone in-store and paid a £50 reservation but we did not talk about having said phone go onto a device plan all I did was pre-order am I just being stupid and that step will happen when said phone turns up in store

You really should have agreed on the contract when leaving the 'reservation (?)' fee
If it is a reservation fee then that would potentially mean it being lost if you can't then agree on a tariff
If it was a deposit then you would have some signed a contract subject to a credit check, although I would have expected this to have been done at the same time
Maybe this was a O2 franchise store because I've never heard of an O2 store asking a reservation fee?
I would ring the store tomorrow for clarification
