Good morning
I already have a contract with O2 in UK and will be travelling to Madeira Island over Christmas and New Year. Would it be better value for me to purchase an additional local SIM (hopefully I would be able to keep the same mobile number) for the duration of my stay compared to normal charges? We visit Portugal regularly so would this be a good option?

Portugal is in the EU zone so you can use your allowances the same as you do at home.

In view of problems some people have had, you may want to contact O2 before you go to make sure there are NO roaming bars on your account...

Advice from an O2 Guru regarding a way to get through:
If you call 202, when it comes to the reason you are calling stay silent for 15 seconds and you will be taken to the keypad options.
Press 2 for Everything Else
Press 5 for More Options
Press 7 for Anything Else which will put you though to an advisor.
Press Upgrade, Lost/Stolen or Fraud if you have to.

We don't yet know exactly what will happen post-Brexit so a local sim might be a better option f you travel there regularly.
