Ok, this is getting ridiculous. Been on chats with O2 4 times now. How hard is it to swap a bloody sim card??? No Service now for almost 24 hours. The original sales guy told me that all I had to do was swap the sim when it came in the post and to relax and do nothing. It would all happen automatically. Yeah right. Anymore bs and I'm closing my accounts with O2 and moving to another network.

Problem finally resolved! Had to restore the entire phone to it's factory settings. Thanks to my phone insurance's technicians who recognized the problem straight off. There are sometimes problems with the iPhone 3gs recognizing new sim cards. This is something O2 should know about, specially as they sold me the phone! I hope they take note of this, so some poor other bugger isn't spending 4 days of his/her life pulling their hair out over this. As soon as it was reset to it's factory settings, it connected straight away. However, you cannot make a backup without the SIM card working. At least that I could see. Thankfully mine was already backed up. Many thanks to everyone who tried to help. Much appreciated.

Well that's an old phone and I've never seen that reported in the forum before, something new everyday here.
It wasn't a sim lock tp prevent another sim being fitted was it?
Glad you found the answer.
