New phone set up issue

Received my new iPhone 11 this morning, help it over old phone as per instruction to set up. The new phone says it needed to update software to 4. something.....it’s been updating for 4hrs!!! Now says reconnecting but nothing happening. My old phone has been beside it. Any help pls? Many thanks

Reconnecting to what? Try rebooting it, but don't start the transfer until both phones are on the same software version.
You need to update the software on both phones to the same version before you back up the old phone and then install the backup on the new phone.
