Dialing *#*#4636#*#* brings up a troubleshooting/statistics menu page. Dial that and select Phone information and at the bottom you can enter the SMSC (Short Mail Service Center) number.

there is no provision in app settings to enter messaging centre number

It should be in Messaging> Settings> Service centre (or similar).

Have you opened messages and then gone into message menu? Settings should be there.

Have been into messages and settings but there is no provision to enter any of the relevant settings.I am using the stock JB messaging app

I'm still looking for more on this but if wi-fi is on try turning it off.
