Guide: How can I sort out my network issues? may help, assuming your WhatsApp works via your home broadband.
Does the problem move with the SIM if you put the SIM into another phone?
Also wipe the SIM gently with a lint-free cloth while you have it out of the phone.
If the SIM is broken, you will gave to go into an O2 shop with some photo id and they will give you a new one no charge. Good luck @chris81uk.

If it worked for PAYG on O2, it will work for Pay Monthly on O2 also.
Have you set up your phone for Pay Monthly instead of PAYG, @chris81uk?

Update
Well its not just me who is having an issue with O2 at the moment looking at the post on here. I've been and change my sim at the O2 shop on Wednesday 14/5/25 . No improvement what so ever still braking up and calls cutting out but What's app works fine ???, Looks like I will be going back to Pay as you go, because I'm paying for something I cant use 😞

@chris81uk You have 14 days to change your mind. If you've gone past that you will have to stay on Pay Monthly: How to return a device or accessory

@chris81uk When you're ready to switch providers be sure to follow this guide:
Cancelling your contract - An updated guide - O2 Community
Also get Pay & Go sims from the other networks to see which one gives you the best signal before you switch.
