second phone number on my mobile

I've received my esim as I requested... I just need to make sure this is the solution I'm looking for before I set things in motion.

Will activating this on my iphone (pay monthly sim installed) give me a second phone number on my existing account?

If you are doing a sim swap to esim then you wont get a second number, it just replaces your physical sim

No I'm trying to get two numbers on one phone, one for work and one for personal, but I think I'm stuffed as my phone is an iphone 8 and I don't think I can use an esim or add a second sim card

The iPhone 8 doesn's support esim, im afraid its the iPhone XS and up Including the 2020 SE, nor is it a dual sim phone...
