Info on what you need to keep costs low depends on whether you are a Pay Monthly, or Contract, customer, or a PAYG customer, @DH5 -

Using Your Phone Abroad → O2 Travel Search Tool | O2

Other info on settings needed on your phone if you are already in South Africa and cannot get your phone to connect to data after enabling Data Roaming on the handset here: Guide: Roaming MegaGuide. If stuck, it is usually because your APN is set incorrectly for the handset, the

Access Point Name controls the data delivery to the phone.

No changes should be required for use anywhere, however, due to the unique way O2 handles iPhone data, you need to have an iData bolt on applied to your account.

Without this bolt on, certain iPhone features won't work and you will not get data abroad unless you change the data apn from the default, which is "idata.o2.co.uk" to "mobile.o2.co.uk"

Also the type of network your phone is set for, 5G or 4G, can, for pay monthly contracts, affect what networks your phone can "see". Finally, if you manually search, under SIM settings, for a network, sometimes picking one that shows as "Forbidden" does actually work. Good luck, @DH5.
