I had some text messages saying work was being done in my area to improve the network but since then my signal has been worse than ever! It is only on 1 bar and cuts out all the time when I’m mid conversation.
Ive tried turning the phone off and on again, mobile data is on etc. What else can I do (apart from changing network provider)

Some tips in here, @Ellaroo0 - and do keep using the O2 network status check tool daily, and encourage others on O2 in your area to do likewise: Guide: How can I sort out my network issues?
Also if you have good broadband in your area, you could try Voice over WiFi if your phone supports it. https://www.o2.co.uk/connectivity/wifi-and-4g-calling
