Hmm iOS 10 update a couple of weeks ago. Could that be it then @MI5 ?
Yes, there has been a push by Ofcom to make this more customer friendly.
Sammy have made changes to their software too.

Some phones will automatically change to a number of texts.
Both my old Z1 and my "new" G4 will do this. The G4 even tells me the number of texts it gets sent as and the number of characters remaining once it gets over halfway.
For example, once I pass half way it shows 120/1 which means 120 left on message 1. Once I pass the limit for one text it shows 240/2 meaning I am into text number 2.
Edit - too late to the party!
