I paid my bill this morning through the app but just got a text and email stating that they will still take the payment on the due date.
is this an automated text or should I contact o2?

wasn't unaware that the dd would be some time after the bill was available, will remember in future to just let it be

You DD is taken 14 days after your bill is generated.
