I had a balance of more than £50 a week ago - I went on a cruise to the Baltic, didn't make any calls, sent 2 short messages and received 2 short replies. Also, received about 20 CB messages which I didn't click on because I didn't know what they were - now my balance is £0. What's happened ?

Done. Thank you.
Thing is I never had this problem before. My balance has been fairly constant for months as I don't make much use of my mobile phone. I mostly use my landline for calls and my laptop for email and web.

Thank you very much for your help.
Just to be clear, you wrote "Stuff like your weather app will be using data all the time and any other apps that poll data in the background." - is this the case, even when the phone is switched off ?
Although I've since remembered that, in addition to sending a couple of texts, I also switched the phone on to use the camera.

The cost of data at home for that kind of background usage is negligible, but at £6 per mb or worse when travelling it doesn't take long to eat through your balance.

Update:
Thank you MercedesS I am indeed grateful for the help and support provided by jonsie, Cleoriff, chrisymon and MI5 .
The possible explanations suggested were plausible, however, it appears the cause may have been something else. I had been unable to contact O2 itself before turning to the community but eventually I had a phone conversation with O2 and it seems the charges related in some way or other to calls made to my number but which I didn't answer. Anyway, the outcome was that O2 refunded the charges and I'm happy with that.
