I keep putting money on but top up doesn’t work

The last 2 months I have topped up my sons phone 4 times. I have changed the tariff and topped up but The mobile data still isn’t working. We have tried turning the phone off/on but still no mobile data. The credit has gone from £10 to £8 when not even been used.
