In your first post you said they weren't working, then they were - Intermittent problems can be sim related but you need to do more investigation first.

If calls and texts are working then check in connections -> mobile network options -> data services should be set to ON. If you get the lower case gsm/edge then it means it detects that but not for data. Upper case obviously means data enabled.

When I had my blackberry it sometimes jumped from 3G to EDGE for no reason but if I turned all network settings off for a few minutes and then refreshed it, it seemed to work.
There are instances when BBM goes down, such as when there is a high volume of users. I used to follow Blackberry/BBM on Twitter to keep up to date so that I knew when there were issues with the server.
As a last resort, have you tried to reset your phone to factory settings?
Options > Security > General > Wipe Handset
It usually asks you to type in 'blackberry' to confirm.
Make sure you back up your phone on your computer prior to the reset.

??? I'm not sure why this post has appeared on an incredibly old thread.
The only useful part of this post was the first paragraph. However, the phone would jump to EDGE because of a signal problem. I have noticed that the phone won't always automatially switch back to 3G, and yes, forcing it back to 3G would be necessary to be able to use data.
BBM very very very rarely goes down. In my 5 years of owning a BlackBerry, BBM has went down twice and one of those times was because of the massive BIS failure.
There are many many things that can be done to resolve problems on BlackBerry phones before even considering a reset to factory settings. This should always be the absolute last resort once all other resolutions have failed, and not necessarily something that needs done just to try and fix a problem with BBM.

An 'incredibly old thread' - its less than 2 weeks old? The last comment was the end of December and now it is the beginning of January.
If you read what I said about factory resetting I clearly said 'as a last resort'
