It's finally here...10 years after the original Planet Earth and well worth the wait. Filming technology has come a long way in the decade since the first series. It has become possible to get even closer to nature, show things in new ways, show new things. The planet itself has changed in those 10 years, too; never has it been more fragile and precious.

Narrated by the wonderful Sir David Attenborough so it could be nothing more than superb

Planet Earth II title iconic imag

The first episode was about Islands and their inhabitants.

We saw Pygmy Sloths travelling miles (slowly) and swimming across a lake.....in order to mate.

Komodo Dragons fighting to the death...again to get mating rights...

Then in typical OMG filming we saw baby marine iguana hatchlings....appearing out of the sand and making a run to meet up with the adults basking on the rocks....and suddenly being chased by dozens of Racer snakes. Some made it...others did not.

This one was lucky....

A hatchling marine iguana sits on the head of an adult at Cape Douglas, on the island of Fernandina. Marine iguanas are unique to the islands of the Galapagos.

Breathtaking, Stunning  and well worth the watch....

I find it incredibly fascinating how these snakes have had to adapt and develope incredible speed to survive. This is nature in the raw and whatever our feelings about dog eat dog to coin a phrase, it's the survival of the fittest.

@jonsie It's amazing! I think David Attenborough described it as "every evolutionary niche being filled" so every  tiny advantage is used.

Some stats about this series...

The equipment used was groundbreaking and included gyro stabilised cameras, remote cameras. drones and even paragliders to get the best shots. HD 4K cameras.... superdirectional microphones were used to capture most of the sound

The 6 minute section about the chinstrap penguins took a year of planning and 7 days to get the team to the island All this before they could start filming. When they tried to get the team off they had a tiny window of time before the storm hit the island

The section about the baby iguanas race for life against the snakes was filmed by drones  and on the ground by two cameramen...one with a camera on a tripod and the other with a hand held device

They went to 40 counties for a total of 117 shoots. No wonder it's magnificent....

It's mountains next week and the guy in charge of filming the elusive snow leopards put his life on the line to get these shots. They had to get up high in the mountains of the Himalayas. He used 20 remote camera traps triggered by motion and these were placed in the mountains up to 5000 metres.

The poor guy got acute mountain sickness and had to come down and spend 2 days in an oxygen tent!!

From the excerpts I have seen of these beautiful but rare and endangered big cats....they captured astonishing footage

There are may be as few as 3500 snow leopards left in the wild. They are famously illusive and difficult to film and have become increasingly threatened by climate change and human disturbance.
