Hi there

in order to get an acceptable new package on Virgin media I’ve been sent a new sim, now, I’ve already got a contract phone from EE so don’t need to use the o2 sim at this point in time so I’m guessing that I just hang onto the sim and do nothing ?

You can hang onto it but it's not free whatever Virgin say. It is in contract to O2 and you will be billed by O2

If you are within the 14 days and you don't want it I would cancel.

You will then have to renegotiate your Broadband with Virgin

Shall we say that Virgin are giving out lots of misformation, apparently to get sales.

This is not O2 and we are all customers here similar to yourself and cannot answer account type queries.
