I lost service about 4pm and after switching off 3 or four times I checked the 02 website to see if any notices about faults. When I didnt see anything obviously there, I contacted my sister who lives just a mile away and her o2 service is working. I therfore put it down to a faulty phone. It was only on delving deeper into the o2 site that I found these discussions and find that many other people are having the same problem all round the country. Why oh why have o2 not put something prominent on their website to save all the wasted time and give us some idea how long the problem is going to last??????? EJ Accrington Lancs

You mean like it didn't happen at Vodafone 6 months ago. No matter how many safeguards you put in place, there is always the possibility of a major network outage. It has happened to all the networks in the past and no doubt will again I'm afraid.

Mentioned elsewhere, but Voda was down in the Scottish/English Borders for over 3 weeks in April, and only got fixed after MPs got involved. Voda did offer to pay compensation, but only for those who had been affected for more than 20 consecutive days! Interestingly France Telecom (Orange) had a similar fault to O2 affecting 26M users earlier in the week, and was caused by an update to Alactel-Lucent equipment that went wrong. The same kit that O2, Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile and every major network in Europe use. ewan

Have you tried rebooting the phone or turning off 3G?

Perksie is correct on this one, a reboot should resolve it.

The best thing to do is, with the phone still on, remove the battery from the phone, then put the battery back in and power up the phone.

Let us know how you get on.

Please tell me you are kidding? They did more than enough to keep everyone up to date. There was the status page, the homepage, and the National News! Please rethink why you are very disappointed, as it sounds like you're disappointed with yourself I'm afraid.

Here we go again, please tell me YOU are kidding 1) this happened at around 1pm 2) status page ( for the five hundreth time)....MOST PEOPLE COULD NOT ACEESS IT, IT WAS mostly TOTALLY UNAVAILABLE !! 3) Radio I first head it around 6pm ( no thanks to O2 ).. 3) reported around 6.30 7pm ( no thanks to O2 ).. 4) the homepage, and this is the good one.........about 9PM !!!!!!!!!!!!! 8 hours after the outage.. And whats more you can discount the radio and TV because I am sure O2 would have been doing its BEST to keep this OUT OF THE MEDIA so they get minus points FOR that......so If thats doing enough to keep everybody up to date I'll eat my hat !!! and guess what, my phone has just gone down again ...... I am curious are some posters here on retainers OR free minutes or something, I cannot understand why they are so slavishly sticking up for O2 all the time. I've always agreed the outage was one of those things and can and does happen to any network, its O2's patheticly slow response that's angered me.... And finally I will not be switching from O2 as I have said this could happen to any network, but I may consider getting an additional pay and go on another network so I'm not caught with me trous down next time, good biz for somebody else but ultimately bad for O2 !!

MOD EDIT: Removed inflammatory remarks.

Well said.Time for the dual sim option to be offered by the premium phone makers. It would sway my decision on which phone to buy.

well since the premium mobile phone makers biggest cilents are the networks what do u think? But u can get a device that make blackberry and iphone using bluetooh dual sim. Also in 2015 EU law is going to make it that you can use say an o2 sim and roam on other network as if u have a contract / pay as u go sim of that network. ie get a local number in that country, get charge by that network as if u are on that network. like they do in Kuwait at the moment.
