Could be a problem localised to your area? have you checked http://status.o2.co.uk/ to see if there is any work going on on your local masts?
If it happens when you're out and about too, could be a problem with your sim. You can pop into an O2 store and get them to swap your sim for you to see if that solves the problem?

Settings , general , reset , reset network settings.
Try your sim in another phone as a process of elimination.
Sometimes having the SIM card swapped out at an i2 shop where they move your tariff and mobile number to a new one can help.
If the sim works fine then have the phone checked out at a genius bar at an apple shop via an appointment here http://www.apple.com/uk/retail/geniusbar/
And if your a contract customer with wifi at home you could try using Tugo.
