I have a new Sony Z3, I always had Sony/Sony Ericsson for the last 15 year!!
Anyway here's my problem, I have always been able to send an mms without having to manually turn the mobile data on and off but with this phone I do! Is it the phone or the settings? I'm told by o2 quite catagorically that I have never been able to send or recieve a picture message without having to MANUALLY turn my mobile data on and off - I think I know what I've been doing for the last umpteen years, but I was more or less told I'm making it up which has made me quite angry with them cos I can happily put the sim card back in my old phone and do it!!! I have a picture message bolt on so I could just happily continue to send my picture texts anytime and carefree as in the past without having to do anything but press send on my messaging app - although of course according to o2 this was just a daydream I've been having for numerous years. Please someone tell me I'm not going mad and am I missing some setting or something. In hope for my sanity.

Aww thanks you have been very kind, when I spoke to customer services who told me I was wrong, then they put me through to a guru who made me feel like poo beneath his feet and I asked if there was anyone else I could speak to and was told NO!!! He said he knew everything there was to know about data and I was wrong!! 😞 Can't face ring them again!! 😞 Was hoping it was something I could do myself in the setting. I've never changed mobile providers in 17 years but I'm still in my cooling off period on my new contact and I'm now quite tempted!! Thanks again 🙂

Surely it must be the phone if by putting the SIM in your old phone it works as previously.
I'm with Vodafone and can send MMS without turning mobile data on.

With Android you do not need data turned on to send an MMS. The OS will automatically turn it on and off as required.
The possible reasons for your current problem is either your phone is set up that way (possible menu setting issue), a faulty phone or Sony now intend it to be that way.
I've just tried my Z1 running 4.4.4 and it will send with data off but I don't have Z3 to try it on.
A member called viridis has a Z3 so he may be able to confirm for you if your phone is working correctly or not.
