Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 - Jelly Bean upgrade

Anonymous
Not applicable

Hello all,

First time poster. Glad to be here!

My mum's just received her new Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 handset on Pay as You Go with O2.

Reading up on tech forums it appears Samsung have released Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for this make of handset back in September. Wikipedia confirms this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_Ace_2

However, when I look at the phone's About Phone page in Settings, it displays the Android version as 2.3.6 (Gingerbread).

When I try an "over the air" update or use Samsung's Kies software I am told the firmware is up to date.

How do I update my mum's handset to the most recent released software?

Any assistance gratefully received!

Bull.

It's getting Jellybean no question about it.

A jellybean build for the phone has already been leaked from Samsung and been tested by many users, you can find loads of videos of this on YouTube (not a homebrew)

it won't get ICS at all because its skipping ICS to go directly to JB.

JB improves the ace 2 by a huge amount and runs perfectly on it.

Look up the Ace 2 specs again. Look up phones that already run JB. The phone's specs are more than adequate. This isn't like upgrading Blackberry OS on a Curve 8520 which has such incredibly lacking hardware that it could not run anything beyond OS 5.

Apparently JB has already been released/rolled out on SOME Ace 2 models (maybe not in this country or on O2). It's clearly just a matter of time. Now, personally I flashed the official Ace 2 JB (yes, offical JB firmware for it) firmware to my phone using Odin (a method NOT recommended for the non tech-savvy) and it ran like a dream for the most part (the occasional stall or crash, but GB has them too) benefitting from all of JBs improvements. Now, I still downgraded back to the stock firmware as I don't wish to lose any official support and would sooner upgrade firmware officially via Kies when it comes in case I happened to miss any further firmware updates/bug fixes. However, if JB doesn't officially come by the end of the year I would happilly manually upgrade again as I know it works fine. The phone CAN run it. It runs it just as well as it runs GB.

Come on O2! Can someone please give us an estimation of when the jellybean update is coming? Or at least confirm it's actually coming for your existing "loyal" customers? I mean Ukraine have it! Germany have it!

Nope, definitely not and nor will it be. 2.3.6 is the latest and it may get ICS but will never get JB.

Actually Jellybean was released today for ace 2 via Kies, I know because I updated my phone this morning.

and I'm mortally happy for you - if only I had the benfit of hindsight 5 months down the road. Good luck with the limited storage space and laggy apps wink

MI5 you sound very butt hurt to be honest. slight_smile

You was wrong in your other posts and today you are wrong again Smiley Surprised

I updated my Ace 2 to JB today and I find it runs better than GB its very responsive

the phone boots faster apps run fine

As for limited storage.. over 1GB for apps + a sdcard ( I have 32GB card) on a mid range phone is fine apps are not laggy at all.

My post is based on actually owning the phone not guess work with zero reaserch.

Having a pop at his phone because you made a mistake is childish

it's a £160 for a sim free model not a £400 S range galaxy.

As I said, I'm happy for you and yes, I guessed wrong 5 months ago.... There are still going to be some that are not happy though esp the gamers.

Some of the guys on XDA tested a few games that give problems under GB and these problems are not not present with JB.

That said this is not a high end phone even with the most optimised software it will never be a gamers dream.

on the whole JB is better then GB on this phone

I have an Ace 2 on O2 but i cannot see how to upgrade on Kies.

I i go to Help/Firmware upgrade and initialisation, it comes up with a box that says "GT-I8160 does not support initialisation"

Any ideas?
