My Z5 compact has stopped giving sound notifications for texts and emails, it just vibrates.  I use the 'do not disturb' at night and sound notifications are on in settings.  I have tried changing the sound and restarting the phone.  What else can I do?

Left and right speakers both work.

I have been using the Clean Master app and wondered if this was the problem.  I have uninstalled it and I now receive sound notifications.  I am pleased that the problem is solved, but I had become used to the silence!  Are cleaning apps worthwhile on phones?

No, they usually result in the loss of sound tongue
But seriously, there's no real need. You can achieve the same thing by rebooting your phone.

I shan't bother to look for a replacement app then.  Thank you all, for taking the time to help me solve my phone problem.
