Android security patch not provided by O2! (and major updates?)

Anonymous
Not applicable

 Hi,

I bought a Pixel 2 XL last week. I was trying to get the latest security patch (Oct 2), so I contacted O2 because I haven't got it yet. Custormer service (chat) said to me that O2 doesn't realise security patches.

Even, they didn't answer me whether they would realise major android updates.

Has anybody got the same problem?

Thanks for the update @Anonymous.... A clever workaround or so it appears...:smileywink:

.... but a workaround that shouldn't be necessary and a workaround that has to be found by a customer's own ingenuity.

Can't argue with that but if O2 are overly slow in rolling out updates then a customers ingenuity should be applauded...clapclap

That's for sure 😀

Good news guys!

I found a solution!

I followed these instrucctions:

Go to Settings.

Click 'Apps & Notifications'

Then 'See all ___ apps.'

Tap the dots in the top right corner.

Click 'Show System'.

Scroll down and select 'Google Services Framework'.

Tap on 'Force Stop', then click 'Storage'

Click 'Clear Cache' & 'Clear Data'

Take out your SIM

Lastly, reboot the phone (I did a soft reboot: press the power button untill it reboots)

Go to Settings --> System --> System Update (you might have to press it several times)

DONE! [Credit to Derek Grace, and I hope this helps you out]

Credit here https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixel/comments/7bdaqe/still_on_september_security_patch_regular_pixel.... I only added the "Take out the SIM card", so i updated the phone using WIFI. Also, I didn't put the SIM in back untill the device asked me to reboot. Now I have the Nov security patch

Hope this helps to everybody.

Just dropping in on this one. Thought I'd relay a chat I just had with o2...

John, we do not deal into Google pixel at all or any of the Google phones.

This is why the link does not work.
Bhavi• 11:43 AM

We deal into all the other phones.

So - just to confirm, if a user has a Google phone, you are unwilling to support them?

And this is why the update is not visible to all the customers.

We are not unwilling to support but we do not have a tieup with Google.

Many of our customers have moved to Samsung, Apple just because we do not deal into Google.

We have sent a text as well as an email confirming the same.

Plenty of good sim only deals out there if you're out of contract....

I don't think Bhavin really knows what he is talking about. Agreed that they have never sold Pixel phones, but that should not stop the OTA updates reaching us. Other Pixel 2 owners have used alternative Sims from non Pixel carriers and managed to receive the update. The belief is that the problem may well be at Google's end. Pity though that O2 aren't at all concerned about their SIM only customers.

Of course - I did see that but thought I'd post my conversation with O2 anyway. Hardly a satisfactory fix for the problem though is it?

I'll be switching from O2 this evening I think.
