Gifting your old phone

I have recently given my old iPhone 7 to a friend, I received a code for the phone when I left O2 but my friend cannot get her SIM card to work in it, any advice?

As it's an iPhone7 it probably needs unlocking so that's down to you.

Edited to add, if that creates a problem then it could be unlocked by a shop in town or a market stall
