I am in Dubai.Can I avoid extra charges if I just use hotel wifi

Yes, @Lizt1 - Keep your phone on airplane mode, with WiFi enabled (use something like WhatsApp to message others with WhatsApp, as Dubai blocks voice and video calls in WhatsApp generally).
Also if you are an O2 voicemail user, disable it - if the tips in Guide: All you need to know about O2 Voicemail 901 do not help, then use your MyO2 to disable Diverts to Voicemail - this is so you are not charged every time an incoming call is diverted to voicemail. Good luck!
