Why do I need to upgrade to get a Samsung watch

Hi, I have just upgraded my phone to a Samsung and wanted to add the Samsung watch but when I do that it says I am upgrading the same number for the watch?

You must take out a new contract for the watch. If you UPGRADE you will lose the ability to use your phone. (as the number will be transferred to the watch! )
