Warning - Data Update Charges

Anonymous
Not applicable
I'm no phone geek so I only use my phone for calls, messaging, camera & little else. Unfortunately unknown to me my phone was set up to allow the apps on the phone to be updated daily. (The Use Packet Data in network settings was ticked). This went unnoticed by me as it made very little to my bill until September and October when it cost me £25 per month. Hope this helps some people.

A simple leaflet or sticker with the phone stating that it is set to use data services and instructions on how to disable so as not to incur charges is all that it needs. Either stuck on the box by the retailer or inside by the manufacturer.

However if you are smart enough to buy a smart phone you should really be smart enough to be aware of data connection and charges.

Certainly a debate I'm sure we'll all be involved in again soon when another thread pops up.

Many just open up the box, rip out the phone and accessories, and boot up unfortunately.

If someone actually got a network message that they had to dismiss before continuing ,then after that point it's user beware.

I'm in total agreement with your suggestion here, and with your second second comment too. wink

Hi guys,

Some great feedback here and a lot of valid points.

I'll talk to the team now and pass this thread on for them to review.

I really like how there is a lot of feedback here, so if you have any in future, go ahead and start a thread, let me know about it and I can pass on any thing you guys have to say. The more the better slight_smile

Glad you're passing this onto the team, Toby, but can you tell me why, after all the numerous threads regarding this issue, has it taken until now for anything to be passed on regarding this?

Hey Bambino,

I've always tried to feedback on anything I see and for this one I focused on the shop aspect. (i.e. those staff members of O2 working in shops) when feeding it back. When I have mentioned data charging notification before, I have admittedly focused on a specific device's online page, the website itself or web-chat. Shops are just as important though in terms of how many customers they have visiting them, so that was my stance with this one especially.

I hope that makes sense slight_smile

Yes, it makes sense, but I think that rather than this idea being concentrated on just the shop aspect, O2 should really take the advice suggested by Jonsie and include a sticker or leaflet with every phone regarding data charges, be it from a shop or a phone purchased online. It's something that really should have been done a long time ago.

Perhaps you could pass that on as well? slight_smile

Just turned data off and back on again and this is the warning I get on the SP.

Did you get that warning initially when you first inserted the simcard? I certainly didn't get it when setting up up my S3.
