Hi-we are spending 6 weeks in Japan and won't need to use my phone for calls but would like to check my Internet when at my daughters using her WiFi. If i turn off data roaming on my settings can I still do that without incurring £6 per day charge?

Best to put phone in airplane mode and then enable wifi, just to be sure.
You can also use WhatsApp over wifi for calls and texts if required.

If you are just going to use WiFi then put the phone into Aeroplane mode and then turn on just WiFi.
That means there is no chance of connecting to a Japanese network.
If you just turn off data roaming anything, such as an incoming call, voicemail etc will trigger the £6
