Hi,
I have had to recently upgrade my elderly father from a very old 2g mobile phone and sim to a nano 4g sim.
I also got him a new phone at the same time a Nokia 235 4G
He is on PAYG and does not need data at all so I have switched it off on his phone as I dont want him to burn through his PAYG top up money by using data
He only makes calls and sends/rcvs TXT messages
Today someone sent him a TXT message that was RCS. His phone does not support this so he did not get the message but O2 sent him a message indicating that he had used some DATA and his charges would just be £2 for the rest of the day.
How can this be when the phones data is switched off ?
Many thanks for any help with this one.

Probably just an assumption by the system as it recognised an RCS going over the network.
However, he will not be charged the full £2.00 as that is a daily charge for all data use. If less than £2.00 worth is used, the amount is refunded less the actual usage.
With data off, I'd guess he will not be charged anything but as the system only updates overnight, you can't check his balance until tomorrow.

Just to be clear you cant send an RCS message to a non compatible number or device, it will try and convert it to either an SMS or if it contains pictures, then it will try and convert it to an MMS hence the data charges as o2 try and send the message to the phone.
If data is off you wont be able to download the message.
