Can anyone tell me I am due for an upgrade currently on an o2 contract through mobile phone direct. If I upgrade directly through mobile direct do I need to cancel old contract with o2

No, not if you upgrade - MPD do the transfer as part of your sign-up, @Nicky1982 - I have used them a couple of times, very straightforward so long as you select your new phone and tariff from the "upgrade" part of the MPD website.

will need to contact customer service to migrate your number to the new contract taken out
