I am abroad in Amsterdam for a number of months and can rarely pick up a signal to use my mobile data. I would be grateul for some advice as I thought I could use 4g wherever I am, especially in major cities

@DFin As far as I am aware, O2 has no 4G roaming agreements in Europe, although recently I had seen a post on the forum saying that you can get 4G in Germany. I don't believe you will be able to get 4G in Amsterdam.

I DO NOT WORK FOR O2

@BambinoIs correct. O2 has no 4G roaming agreements other than with Germany.

If you are struggling to get a signal try a manual network search and see if changing the one you are currently using improves your situation @DFin

You also need to turn off 4g and just try to select 3g as this confuses some phones due to no 4g roaming.

@DFin Another alternative, if you really need 4G for your data, would be to get a sim from a local provider, if your phone is unlocked.
