Receiving texts abroad

I have a pay as you go SIM. When I went abroad recently (Turkey) I found that I could not receive texts, but I would like to receive texts as two-factor authentication on many of my internet accounts. 

I do not need any other features such as any need to receive phone calls or data. Is it possible to turn on the ability to receive texts abroad?

It's not possible to choose just texts when abroad.
With international use enabled you get calls and data too.
You would need to keep data turned off to avoid charges but after June 14th you can use your uk allowances in Europe anyway.

I find it strange that you couldn't receive texts when abroad? I was on PAYG for years and never had a problem when  abroad with sending or receiving texts at all. Maybe a issue with the Turkish network?

It could be that or the fact that international roaming isn't enabled on the account?
