Hope the split is amicable because only the account holder can change any details and the best time to do that is when the account is due to end

You need to get  new account in your name and try to get your ex to transfer the number if you want to retain it

You will also need to pass a credit check @Megxxx11

He's only ruining his own credit rating if he's not paying the bill @Megxxx11

I'd just get a new contract in your own name and be done with it.

You can't change the ownership of an account

A new account needs to be taken out and  credit check passed

The number can be transferred to a new account as ong as both parties are present on the phone call

Transferring a number will close the original account with any fees payable

It's better to wait until the originating account is due for renewal or cancellation after the minimum term
