I have just received the new SIM and loaded into phone - how do I keep my original number

You need to do a sim swap 

 

go instore & they will do it for you or use this link

If if your current sim fits in your phone then put that in & you will be set to go

Thinking further about this, did you request the change via customer service?
If so, the PAYG sum should have arrived with your correct number on it.
If not your old contract will still be running so you will need to call CS to cancel the old contract and migrate your number.
