You can check your phone for data usage in your MyO2 http://www.o2.co.uk/myo2
Normally You Tube or other videos and FB are the culprits.
You can turn off apps running in the background....

When you say upgraded did you upgrade your phone?
If so it could be the phone updating it's OS and apps.
