Data roaming turned off, still charged

Anonymous
Not applicable

When in Ghana over xmas/new year, I did what I understood we are advised to do, I left 'Data Services' On in order that I could browse via wifi but turned Off 'Data while roaming' (BB 9810 Torch).

However, I quickly became aware that my BB was accessing data, and had to turn Data Services off fully.

This has resulted in O2 charging me (only a few quid, as luckily I had spotted it happening early on).

How can this happen?  Must I always turn Data Services completely off when I leave the UK?

There are a few issues reported on the BB forums with 9800's and the same issue as you have. BB don't seem to have an answer so speculation is a bug in the software that still allows data over cell network even with roaming off, as it is required (on this model) to be on for wifi. My guess is that when you turn wifi on it overrides the data settings on the phone.....

Yes, if you want to avoid any data charges. Wifi will still work with all cell data off.

So what's the point of being able to switch off 'Data while roaming'?

I was only able to use wifi with data enabled, so had to turn it on, then disconnect the mobile network.
