Well its all new to me Nick. I am not one that goes exploring through the 'inner sanctity' of phone settings
I set it up to what suits me and then I am good to go. So when new info is dropped into the learning pot I will try it.... if it suits me

It's worth noting that it's not just about smilies - you can do useful things like send SMS messages in Japanese too, (on my Note 3 you just enable Japanese in languages and input).
Also, not all smilies are equal. When in unicode mode, the first plain smile one on my Note 3 uses a single unicode character. Most of the others use two.

@Anonymous yes i may have sent a few smileys amungst the 20 texts, but sms are 40p too aswell as mms so are you saying each text would be 80p with the smileys - double? so confused?
anyway the number it says i was texting is one i have never seen before in my life....
