I have changed tariff to a much more expensive one which will include more data for when I am abroad. The lady in the O2 shop told me that it would be effective the next day but nothing has happened yet - 2 days later. I am concerned that the data allowance will not change until after my next billing date which will be after I need the data abroad.

A tariff change takes effect from your next bill.
An upgrade is immediate, so it depends which you did?
Data abroad in EU is limited to 25gb per month and the rest of world is unlimited data per day with O2 travel.

So lady in O2 shop gave me incorrect info then!!! Apparently if I go into a shop they can activate it overnight.
Trying to get through on 202 has resulted in me being cut off 13 times so far....

It would appear so.
Like I said, a tariff upgrade is immediate but a tariff change is not.
The differences are subtle, but important as far as O2's systems are concerned.

When you call, you will be asked for the reason you are calling.
Stay silent for 15 seconds and you will be taken to the keypad options.
Press 2 for Everything Else
Press 5 for More Options
Press 7 for Anything Else which will put you though to someone.
You can also try saying "Upgrade" or "Fraud" to be connected to an advisor.
8.00am is the best time to call if you can.
