Cannot check my data usage on the website or on the iphone app.
Obviously I dont want to go over the limit, but how am I ment to know how much data I am using?

I'm talking about the phone's inbuilt data monitor in the phone's settings not the app. You need to contact customer service to get your My O2 account reset.

You should be able to access it through My O2 so check you have the correct account details. You can also check in the phone settings under data usage and it can be reset everymonth.

I really think that I should be able to see my recent useage online in My O2 account.

You can see how much you've used but not the detail regarding what it was used on.
You need to look at your phone for that info as the network only sees data traffic.
