I live in kemp town and have contacted 02 for 8 web chats, one letter and a phone call (from someone else's phone which I had to pay for) and I am being repeatedly fobbed off and told that I will have to pay over £500 to get out of my contract. the alleged new mast has Made no difference and today, having been to various parts of Brighton, there appears to be absolutely no signal or 3G anywhere in the city. All I want to do is change provider and having read the terms and conditions of the pay monthly contract, it seems that we are allowed to break the contract if 02 'change the terms of the agreement to the customers significant disadvantage'
Yesterday I wrote to the communications ombudsman but it will be at least 10 days before they respond. I am going to go into town today and demand some answers as I simply cannot be without my phone for work.
I have been with 02 since 1999 and I can't believe how shoddily they are treating loyal customers. I want out and will seek legal advice if I have to I think what 02 are forgetting is that customers have rights under the sale of goods act......

The Ombudsman won't help unless you have exhausted the O2 complaint procedure first:

I think it's shocking the way O2 are treating their customers if it's true they are tying them to their contracts. The service, even after the 'fix' is just not there. Me and my wife had both been with O2 payg for about 15 years. Final straw was when we had a fire in our block of flats (you may have noticed the fire engines bottom of Eaton Place.) This was after the new mast had been turned on. Me and my wife were running about daft trying to get a signal to phone a neighbour who had smoke pouring under his door. No signal anywhere. As the noisy alarm was going off we could not even go back into the flat and use the landline. Fortunately another neighbour was not with O2 and she was able to phone him. It's a bit perplexing. O2 have now lost 3 payg customers from my household. We didn't want to change but they left us no choice with the non existant service. And now according to some of the posts here they are being unreasonable and trying to charge people to cancel the contract for their 'service.' Someone high up in O2 ought to look into this and make sure customers aren't penalised for having been forced to leave.

As you are on PAYG buying out of contract does not concern you. Obviously you can just leave.... NO mobile phone should be relied upon for emergency use either. You could have a full signal and run out of battery at a critical moment.... O2 (or indeed any other network provider) will allow customers out of their contracts anyway if they fail to provide the service for a reasonable length of time, but the customer concerned has to approach the network themselves and go through the mediation process....
I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.

the temp mast is working I get a signal in most of the hospital still a lot of black spots but it is not as good as the old mast which is to be expected as it is a lot lower Down and surrounded with houses no sign of the new permanent mast yet
@katyj if your not getting signal anywhere I think you must have a problem with your phone

I live in Brighton Marina. Previously had good signal for voice and data in my house, now have none. Like others this has been going on since the end of March. I'm aware of the temporary mast but this has made no difference. I frequently visit the hospital where the signal is still very poor, this is also the same in the shops & services in Kemptown's centre!

This is literally a whole town that is being affected ! The Marina is Brighton's second largest tourist attraction & home to thousands of people also.

I have spoken to Brighton Marina Management Company & they inform me that they wouldn't object to a mast in many locations temporary or permanent.

1. Could 'Abs', give some informed view as to when normal service (not this temp service) will be resumed? Are we talking weeks or months? How many weeks or months? Also some idea of what the permanent solution is, with some basic tech info?

2. Also 'Abs', are there further temporary solutions proposed & what is their time frame? Particularly with a view to covering the Marina as advertised.

3. Has anyone had success in getting their Pay Monthly subscription refunded while works are on-going, how do you go about it?

4. I use my mobile phone for business & have broadband at home, might I be eligible for a 'Boost Box'? Will it allow phone calls? How do you get one from O2?

Thanks Garry.

Thanks with regard to point 4, (sounds expensive, was hoping O2 would temporarily provide one).

Looking forward to getting a clear reply with regards to Points 1 - 3. It's been 2 months now & it's clear they've received many complaints. Literally a whole town (Kemptown) & the East end of a major UK city including my suburb (Brighton Marina) apparently Brighton's largest facility by visitor numbers continuing to be affected !

Garry.
