Why  is o2 sending me verification codes

Someone might be entering their number wrong or some could be trying to hack your account.

I have had those in the past when I had not been registering for any of their apps. Customer service told me it must be another user entering the wrong number.

Does it not say in the text what the codes are for? I think the only app likely to be left now is Priority.
