I vowed never to use virgin media after they were disgusting with my grandparents. Now they are merging with O2 I am reluctant to carry on with O2 where do I stand with my contract

You have no grounds to leave for free as your contract T&C's do not change, however, you are perfectly entitled to pay off what you owe on current contract and leave.
